Devlog (1): Let's go for a ride

Devlog (1): Let's go for a ride

It's official, I'm kicking off the devlog for the full version of this project, now tentatively called Ramble. I have an unfortunate injury at the moment that precludes a ton of work, but I'm doing what I can to keep the momentum going. For those of you new to the project or page, the idea started as a quick prototype during Ludum Dare game jam (number 58,) where the theme was collection.

I wanted to make a cozy little experience and I envisioned a bunch of strange little passengers riding a train between two towns and filling out stamp books along the way. These books would be full of little bugs, art, and shrines to see. Due to the restrictive nature of the jam and working by myself, I was only able to get the tiniest fraction of that in (no surprise there!) The prototype has received lots of feedback, and a few requests for a larger more expanded version. So here I am!

As I have updated the game page to reflect, the full project is planned to include:

  • Many locations to travel to: little parks, cafes, and shrines
  • Far more than just trains to travel via: cars, trains, planes, boats
  • Stamp your bug collection, but also a travel book and maybe even have a pet?
  • Talk to more weirds, and with far more cohesive dialog

I want far more dynamism in the world and the little weirdos you meet along the way, so my first order of business has been ideation. While sketching what my injury has permitted, I've been charting out the far range of possibilities and then cutting for scope.  I don't want this project to take forever or to fall into obscurity either for others or myself. To that end I'm working to structure it as a sort of modular experience that I can add more to over time.

I cannot type too much at the moment, but I'll be trying to get a devlog out once every other week at the latest, maybe more frequently health permitting - so stay tuned!

Eli
